A Meeting of Three Supertenors: Was It Musical?

Share

Concerning “A Supertenor Circus at Roman Baths,” Martin Bernheimer’s March 13 review of the televised concert featuring Placido Domingo, Jose Carreras and Luciana Pavarotti, with conductor Zubin Mehta:

The three greatest tenors in the world combined to present a concert unparalleled in our century. After hearing a compact disc of the concert, I prayed that Calendar’s Martin Bernheimer would not be the one to review the TV broadcast of the performance.

Bernheimer seems to despise the human voice and tenors in particular. He should be given tuba and drum concertos to review--but never, never singers.

We who support classical music don’t need him to destroy the small toehold it has in the United States.

Elsewhere in the world the concert that Bernheimer derides is a No. 1 seller on CDs; and for a simple reason--it is great music. It might, heaven forbid, attract a few young people to our fold.
