Beverly A. Shelters, who taught for more than 20 years and worked as a volunteer after her retirement at Haskell Avenue School, has died at a Mission Hills hospital. She was 73.

A longtime Granada Hills resident, Shelters died Wednesday of a heart attack, said her husband, Victor Shelters.

Born in Omaha, Shelters earned a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Nebraska and came to California in the early 1940s. She worked for a few years for the Lockheed Corp. and in 1958 she began teaching at Haskell Avenue School in Granada Hills. She retired from the school in 1980 but continued to volunteer until late last year, helping students with reading.
