About 220 Ethiopian Jews arrived in Israel on Friday after a three-week block on emigration to the Jewish state by the Addis Ababa government.

Ethiopian community leaders in Israel said President Mengistu Haile Mariam abruptly cut the exodus of black Jews on March 1 to pressure Israel into supplying military aid to help him fight mounting civil war.

Israel denied that Ethiopia was trying to barter Jews for arms and said the stoppage was due to technical problems.
