A 17-year-old North Hollywood youth was shot and killed and a companion seriously wounded in what appeared to be a gang-related attack, Los Angeles police said.

David Cano was driving west on Dehougne Street in North Hollywood at 9:15 p.m. Sunday when he stopped at Radford Avenue and three youths walked up to the car and began talking with its three occupants. One of the youths began firing into the car with a handgun, Police Detective David Alfred said.

Cano was shot in the chest and died at the scene. Another 17-year-old youth, whose name was not released, was hospitalized with chest wounds and was in stable condition, Alfred said.

A third person in the car, also 17, was not injured.

No arrests had been made, but Alfred said a preliminary investigation indicated that the shooting was gang-related.
