A steam pipe burst under one of Manhattan’s key shopping streets Tuesday, sending up a 12-story geyser that officials said contained bits of asbestos.

Adjacent streets were closed, creating a massive traffic jam, and one street--58th Street between Lexington and 3rd Avenue--was shut to pedestrians as well. The steam pipe broke open near Alexander’s department store on 58th. Bloomingdale’s, another major store, is just a block away.

The cause of the explosion, which injured two construction workers, was not immediately known.
