Compton : Public Forum Planned for Mayor, Council Candidates

Share

Candidates for mayor and the Compton City Council will meet in a forum Wednesday night sponsored by the Compton branch of the NAACP. The event, which is open to the public, will be held from 7 to 10 p.m. at the old city hall at 600 N. Alameda St.

There are seven people vying in the April 16 election to replace Mayor Walter R. Tucker, who died of cancer last fall. Among the candidates are Tucker’s son, Walter Jr., and three of the city’s four council members. The three are Maxcy D. Filer, Patricia A. Moore and Bernice Woods. Also running for mayor are Lisa Weir, Saul Lankster and former Councilman Floyd James.

The mayor’s race is a special election being held at the same time as the regular City Council election. Two council seats are open this year. Filer is not running for reelection in District 1 and there are six candidates trying to replace him. In District 4, incumbent Jane Robbins has four challengers.
