Kuwait to U.N.: It Will Protect Its Palestinians
Kuwait, fighting allegations that some Palestinians living there have been tortured and killed since the emirate was freed from Iraqi occupation, has told the United Nations that it will protect its Palestinian population.
The Kuwait News Agency on Wednesday quoted a letter to U.N. Secretary General Javier Perez de Cuellar from Kuwait’s ambassador to the United Nations as saying that the International Committee of the Red Cross is free to visit any detainees in Kuwait.
The agency’s report, received in Nicosia, Cyprus, said Ambassador Mohammed Abulhasan told the secretary general that the Kuwaiti government “is striving to preserve security and protect citizens and residents.”
” . . . It asserts that every citizen is responsible in front of the law for his actions, and it will not allow any violations,” Abulhasan said.
His letter was delivered to Perez de Cuellar on Tuesday night, the agency said, and Kuwait asked that it be circulated as an official U.N. document.
About 300,000 to 400,000 Palestinians lived in Kuwait before the Gulf War. An estimated 170,000 have remained.
