Israel on Thursday barred the 1.75 million Palestinians of the occupied territories from the Jewish state, fearing further Palestinian unrest during a major Jewish holiday and a traditional day of Arab protest.

Military sources said that all Arabs of the West Bank and Gaza Strip were barred from Israel and annexed East Jerusalem from midnight Thursday until midnight Saturday.

A Reuters correspondent in Gaza said an indefinite curfew was clamped on the strip’s 700,000 residents Thursday night.

The seven-day Jewish Passover festival starts at sunset today. Saturday is Land Day, the anniversary of the 1976 killing by police of six Israeli Arabs who were protesting over land rights.

Meanwhile, Israeli troops shot and killed a 12-year-old Palestinian boy Thursday during a clash with stone-throwing protesters in Gaza, and an elderly Jewish man was stabbed in Jerusalem’s Old City.

Arab doctors reported 28 other protesters were wounded in the Gaza clash.

The army identified the shooting victim as Saeed Oda abu Murr of Rafah refugee camp and said it was investigating the incident.
