Simi Valley police plan to seek a vehicular manslaughter charge against the driver of a car involved in a crash that killed an Anaheim woman and injured five other people.

The charge will be sought through the district attorney’s office this week against Chris Brown, 19, of Simi Valley, Lt. Neal Rein said Saturday.

Brown was the driver of a car that crossed into oncoming traffic during a speeding contest on Tierra Rejada Road and collided with another car, police said. A passenger of the second car, 76-year-old Dorothy Helliwell of Anaheim, was killed, and driver Judith Tout, 51, of Simi Valley was injured.

Tout was discharged Saturday from Simi Valley Adventist Hospital.

The three passengers in Brown’s car were listed in fair condition Saturday afternoon, hospital officials said. Tina Melson, 18, and her brother Gene, 16, of Moorpark were taken to the Simi Valley hospital, and David Ferguson, 19, of Simi Valley was taken to Los Robles Regional Medical Center.

Police are still trying to determine who drove a pickup involved in the speeding contest with Brown. Investigators were questioning witnesses Saturday, Rein said.
