SOUTH KOREA: South Korean labor unions have announced wage hike demands above the compensation guidelines set by the government, signaling a new round of conflict between unionists and federal authorities. The Federation of Korean Trade Unions said it would seek a 17.5% wage increase for 1991 to cover escalating living costs. The government has urged businesses to keep wage increases below 10%. The labor federation is also expected to seek the release of about 250 workers imprisoned by the government on illegal-strike charges and other alleged labor-law violations.
