From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Strong earthquakes struck separate regions of Peru within 24 hours, leaving at least 38 people dead. The killer quake, which struck the jungle region of San Martin, about 400 miles north of Lima, was measured at magnitude 6.2. It struck about 12 hours after a magnitude 5.8 quake had hit the same region, the Peruvian Geophysical Institute said. A separate quake along the southern coast, measured at magnitude 5.5, injured one person and toppled walls in Ica, 160 miles south of Lima. Geologists said they believe the two widely separated temblors are related.
