I am writing to compliment you on the wonderful work Linda Blandford does in her weekly column (Commentary). In the midst of all the truly bad news that the Editorial Page must help the readers make sense of, her column is a calming presence.
I have cut many clippings from her columns and sent them on to friends back East to enjoy. And I have posted her articles on our office bulletin board to give everyone a chance to pause and enjoy her studies of people patiently perfecting their crafts.
Her writing not only captures the essence of the people she discovers and passes on to the reader, it captures her own respect for their quiet lives. Though each day the media remind us of the fact that we are all judged by our bank accounts, clothing and cars, Blandford's columns remind us that just doing the job well is enough.
