Spotlight on Another Gates: Soon Police Chief Daryl Gates’ son, Scott, may be getting television coverage of his own. The production company Joseph Rix Ubell & Malis has acquired the rights to Scott’s life, and plans to turn his tale of substance abuse and recovery into a TV movie. Producer Jane Ubell called Scott’s story an American tragedy: “He was a victim of a family torn apart by divorce, and a father that was ambitious.” She said Scott, 34, was in jail several times, and began abusing substances at an early age. “But now he is recovering, so it’s not a we’re-out-to-get-you story, but one of redemption.” The younger Gates is working with the company on the project. The group’s first project was “The Queen of Mean,” a TV movie about Leona Helmsley.
