From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Campbell to Change Ads: Campbell Soup Co. agreed to change its advertising to settle a government complaint that it made deceptive claims about the health benefits of its soups, the Federal Trade Commission said. Under the proposed agreement with the FTC, Campbell will list the sodium content of some soups in ads that refer to heart disease. The FTC charged in 1989 that Campbell’s ads--linking the low-cholesterol, law-fat content of its soups with a reduced risk of some types of heart disease--were deceptive because it did not mention the soups’ high sodium content. High-sodium diets can increase the risk of heart disease.
