Ford to Produce Electric Vehicle: Ford Motor Co. will build a fleet of up to 100 electric-powered vehicles for U.S. and European testing by 1993, the No. 2 auto maker said. The pilot vehicles, based on the Ford European Escort van, will use a sodium-sulfur battery, which Ford invented in 1965. The company plans to mass produce electric vehicles by the late 1990s. Southern California Edison said it will participate in the pilot program by leasing 10 of the vans.
