Oakland reliever Gene Nelson had a little finger broken when he was struck by a foul ball in the dugout on Tuesday night, and the Athletics said he will be sidelined for about six weeks.

Nelson said he had little time to react because the ball came at him so fast.

“It was coming at my face,” Nelson said of the drive off the bat of the Minnesota Twins’ Mike Pagliarulo. “I stuck my hand up to keep it from hitting me in the face. It happened to hit me in the pinkie. I knew when it hit it was broken. It sounded like a pencil cracking.”

Nelson was 3-3 with a 1.57 earned-run average and five saves in 51 appearances last season.
