The northwestern republic of Slovenia said it will secede from Yugoslavia by the end of June. And the republic of Croatia said it will follow suit if Slovenia goes ahead. Slovenian President Milan Kucan announced his decision at a summit of Yugoslavia’s six bitterly divided republics, whose leaders met in the Slovenian resort of Brdo Kod Kranja to try to solve a crisis that threatens the country with civil war. They agreed to hold a referendum in each republic to let the people decide whether they want to stay in Yugoslavia and how they want the country to be organized.
