Official May Quit Parks-Wildlife Post
Constance Harriman, the assistant secretary of the Interior responsible for America’s national parks and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, is expected to resign to accept a position with the Export-Import Bank, Bush Administration sources said Friday.
Harriman, a native of Los Angeles, served in the Energy and Interior departments during the Ronald Reagan Administration, worked in the 1988 Bush presidential campaign and practiced law in Washington before joining the Interior Department.
Her 1989 appointment was criticized by conservationists and environmentalists because of her lack of experience in wildlife and conservation issues. But she was later hailed for leading the U.S. delegation in international negotiations that led to the banning of trade in elephant ivory.
Administration sources said that the leading candidate to replace Harriman is former Kansas Gov. Mike Hayden.
