Five smartly dressed bandits forced employees to open two safes in a Cartier jewelry shop Friday, then took one of the workers hostage and fled with gems worth $4.1 million, police said.

The hostage, who was hustled into a waiting car, was released unharmed after a brief drive through the heavily trafficked center of Italy’s fashion and financial capital, police said. The bandits, all dressed in suits and ties, then sped away.
