Nation IN BRIEF : NEW JERSEY : U.S. to Take Over Atlantic City Union

The federal government assumed control of Local 54 of the Hotel and Restaurant Employees International Union because of its alleged ties to organized crime. U.S. Atty. Michael Chertoff said in Trenton, N.J., that replacing Local 54’s officers with a court-appointed monitor was the first step in purging mob influence from the union, which represents 22,000 workers in Atlantic City’s casinos, hotels and restaurants.
