German Finance Minister Theo Waigel, the first official to arrive for the dinner, said, “We will be discussing almost everything in the world.”

Japanese Finance Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto said no one should expect concrete agreements from the meeting. He said discussions would be broad.

Brady wanted to meet with his counterparts to explore how events over the past two years--including German unification, changes in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, and the Gulf crisis--have affected the global economy and the other countries’ domestic economies and agendas, U.S. Treasury spokeswoman Desiree Tucker-Sorini said.

He also wanted to hear what his counterparts have to say about economic growth and inflation, capital flows and economic policy cooperation in the G-7, she said.
