Indonesia to Phase Out Logging by Foreigners
Indonesia has decided not to extend licenses of foreign-owned logging concessions and is urging timber firms not to employ expatriates during this year.
Djamaludin Suryohadikusumo, director general for forest exploitation, said the government will not extend expiring licenses of forest concessions jointly owned by local and foreign companies. Instead, the 20-year concessions will go only to domestic companies.
Indonesia’s tropical forest is the most valuable in Asia. More than half of the country is covered with forest.
