Long Beach : City College Summer Classes Cut Because of Tight Budget
Long Beach City College has cut the number of classes it is offering this summer by half because of budget restrictions. “The state’s budget crisis has been the subject of a great deal of discussion,” said Robert Kariger, vice president of academic affairs. “All institutions of higher education in the state are having to take measures to meet the shrinking funding allocations we have.”
Recent projections predict a deficit in next year’s state budget of about $13 billion, a reality that has prompted community colleges throughout California to cut back on staff hours and programs.
In Long Beach, Kariger said, administrators are also considering scaling back next year’s fall and spring semester offerings to meet budget restrictions. This year’s first summer session runs June 3 to 28. A second session begins July 1.
