Cal Lutheran University has named Nicaraguan President Violeta Barrios de Chamorro the 1991 recipient of the Thomas Wade Landry Humanitarian Medal.

Chamorro, the country’s first democratically elected president, was picked for her “strong Christian faith, personal sacrifice and concern for young people everywhere through her quest for world peace,” university President Jerry H. Miller said.

The medal is named in honor of Landry, a Hall of Fame football coach, because of his strong Christian principles, university officials said. The campus was the summer home of the Dallas Cowboys for at least 20 years. Landry is the former coach of the Cowboys.

The annual award previously has been given to 11 recipients, including Gov. Pete Wilson, Bob Hope, Nancy Reagan, Pulitzer prize-winning sports columnist Jim Murray, former President Gerald Ford and late entertainer Danny Thomas.

Chamorro, elected in 1990, will be presented with the medal May 9 in Beverly Hills.
