Jazz, ragtime piano, a few old standards...

Jazz, ragtime piano, a few old standards and a good helping of comedy will be on hand today at the Hermosa Civic Theatre. And it will be very much a family affair as jazz pianist Paul Smith, his wife, singer-pianist Annette Warren, and their daughter, singer and comedienne Lauri Johnson, present “A Marriage of Music and Mirth.” Shows are at 4 and 8 p.m.

During more than three decades of marriage, Smith and Warren--who live in Rancho Palos Verdes--have played duo piano. Today they’ll dig into “Dizzy Fingers” and a few other ragtime tunes. Also on tap will be jazz by Smith and his trio--the others are Wilfred Middlebrooks on bass and drummer Greg Field. Warren and Johnson will join the trio, singing “Always,” “I’ll Get By” and other standards. Johnson will do a turn of “I Got Rhythm,” but with a slight problem: She can’t keep time to the music.

“It’s fun, good music and a few laughs,” says Smith, a veteran of movies, television and appearances with the likes of Ella Fitzgerald, Sammy Davis Jr. and Pearl Bailey. He played for 13 years at the Velvet Turtle in Redondo Beach and is currently at the Sheraton San Pedro Hotel.

Warren’s voice is familiar to anyone who’s seen the MGM movie version of “Showboat”-- she dubbed Ava Gardner’s singing voice. She also pursued a career that included nightclubs, television and recordings. Johnson performs with the Orange County Crazies comedy troupe.

The Hermosa Civic is at 710 Pier Ave., Hermosa Beach. Tickets are $25.
