TAIWAN: Taiwanese officials are upbeat about the island nation’s economic prospects in the wake of the end of the Gulf War. Shirley Kuo, chairman of the nation’s Council for Economic Planning and Development, told the Cabinet that better-than-expected agricultural production, rising foreign trade, steady prices, prospects for Taiwanese participation in Middle East reconstruction and other factors point toward a dramatic resurgence in the economy. The nation has set a goal of 6.2% growth for the year.
