HONG KONG: The Hong Kong government may be reassessing its options on a new airport in the wake of the failure of Chinese and British officials to reach an agreement on the project during talks in Beijing. The South China Morning Post said the government has called for a study of the possibility of expanding the existing airport in case it decides to scrap the airport plan. Hong Kong’s government says that Kai Tak, the existing airport on Hong Kong harbor landfill that is sandwiched into a mountainside, will reach its capacity in 1994, and that a new airport is necessary for the territory’s long-term prosperity and pre-eminence as a world financial and trading center. China is concerned that the project will drain Hong Kong’s reserve funds before the territory reverts to Chinese sovereignty in 1997.
