Lt. Gen. Charles A. Horner, who commanded U.S. air operations during the Persian Gulf War, was welcomed home Sunday by more than 1,000 military personnel and civilians.

Horner returned to Shaw Air Force Base and said coming back was like being “back in the world. It’s like being alive again.”

Horner, 54, an Iowa native, commands the 9th Air Force, headquartered at Shaw. Since Aug. 5 he had been in the Middle East, where he planned and led the bombing of Iraq.
