Scruton on Egalitarianism

Share

I found Scruton’s article to be in bad taste. No doubt Scruton, a white conservative, finds it amusing to compare his “historical suffering” to that of African-Americans and other minorities. Who would dare laugh at such a comparison?

Also appalling is Scruton’s nostalgic claim that “in America, the home of liberal individualism, people are no longer judged as individuals.” What America is he referring to? Or perhaps this sage can refresh our memory and relate to us a period in history, prior to the civil rights movement, when an African-American or Native-American was considered the equal of a white male? What Scruton well knows is that “people” back then meant white males. America was never the home of “liberal individualism” but instead “privileged individualism.”
