SIMI VALLEY : Planners to Discuss Toxic Waste Center

Share

The Simi Valley Planning Commission will consider a proposal for a collection center for recyclable toxic waste at its Wednesday night meeting.

Simi Valley residents could drop off motor oil, latex paint, auto batteries and antifreeze at the proposed center on the southeast corner of 5th Street and Pacific Avenue on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon. The toxic waste would then be picked up within 90 days by qualified haulers.

“There is definitely a need for this facility and it’s the most cost-effective alternative we could come up with,” said Jocelyn Reed, deputy director of environmental services for the city. There would be no cost to residents for the service.

If the project is approved and construction goes as scheduled, the $38,000 center would be ready for use June 15, Reed said.

Last year, when the city held a single collection day for toxic wastes, about 1,475 households participated, and it cost the city about $238,000, said Wolf Ascher, the city’s planning manager.
