A majority of students at Buena and Ventura high schools feel safe on campus, but many said they have seen students with guns or knives at school, according to a district survey released Tuesday.

Forty-four percent of students at each school said they had seen fellow students with knives. Sixteen percent of Ventura High School students said they had seen students with guns, while 14% of Buena’s students reported seeing firearms on campus, according to the report, which was presented to the Ventura Unified School District board on Tuesday.

Sixty-five percent of Buena’s students and 74% of Ventura’s students, however, reported that they generally feel safe at school.

The survey also showed that 62% of Ventura’s students and 61% of Buena’s students had seen classmates high on drugs or alcohol while at school.

Board members discussed ways to increase campus safety, including updating the district’s dress code and expanding a ban on hats at Buena and the four middle schools to include all district schools.
