George Steinbrenner choked back tears as he testified in Manhattan federal court against Howard Spira, the admitted gambler charged with trying to extort money from the former owner of the New York Yankees.

Steinbrenner’s voice broke with emotion when he was asked by the prosecutor to read a phone list kept by Spira that included the home numbers of Steinbrenner’s friends and family members.

He Steinbrenner sniffled and stopped talking to take deep breaths. “Are you OK, sir?” Assistant U.S. Attorney Gregory W. Kehoe asked twice.

Steinbrenner took a drink of water and indicated he was ready to continue.
