Cheney to Close More Bases

Share

Perhaps this is too simple a solution to a complex problem, but it occurs to me that the proposed closing of military bases affords a unique opportunity to do something about the terrible problem of homeless people that plagues our country.

These bases are fully self-contained, complete with beds, eating facilities, laundry facilities, showers, classrooms, medical facilities, etc. These bases could easily be utilized for shelter and job-related training. Also, since some jobs would be made available to local people, the effect of the base closing on the community would be lessened. Teachers, medical personnel, dietitians and many other skilled people would be needed to help run the facilities.

Local and national businesses could provide vocational job training and in return would create a pool of trained personnel to draw upon.

As a taxpayer I would prefer to see these bases used, if possible, to become a positive move forward in solving a serious national problem instead of sitting empty, or simply providing another speculator the opportunity to make millions while our people starve in the streets.
