Parking Fees Set for Fall Term

Share

El Camino Community College District Trustees Monday unanimously approved a $20 parking fee for the 1991-92 fall semester, as well as increases for subsequent academic years.

Students who ride motorcycles or participate in a ride-sharing program will pay $10 a semester when the fee goes into effect in September. Students who receive financial aid or have a handicapped parking permit will be exempted. Parking currently is free.

Parking fees will increase again in the 1992-93 academic year when regular parking will be $25, motorcycle parking will be $12 and ride-sharing participants will pay $15 a semester. The fee has a cap for the 1993-94 academic year of $30 a semester for regular parking, $15 a semester for motorcycles and $20 a semester for ride-sharing participants. Summer session students will pay $10.

The parking fee is expected to generate about $700,000 annually. The revenues will be used to pay for parking maintenance, parking security and increased parking at the north end of the campus, said El Camino spokeswoman Mary Ann Keating.

It has not yet been decided whether visitors to the college will pay a fee, she said. The college will support nearby residents who are asking the county to institute a permit parking system, Keating added. Students now park in the neighborhoods to avoid longer walks to classes on the north side of the campus.
