Funding Denied to Library District
The Palos Verdes Library District has failed to obtain $9 million in state money to expand its main library in Rolling Hills Estates.
The district had hoped to receive the money under the California Library Construction and Renovation Bond Act of 1988. The state library’s board of directors met Tuesday and awarded more than $36 million for various library projects statewide.
Linda Elliott, the library district’s director, said Wednesday that the district’s failure to receive the state money will not affect its plan to ask Palos Verdes Peninsula voters on June 4 to pass a $16-million bond sale. Proceeds from the sale would be used to double the size of the main library.
Because of the uncertainty over the requested state funding, the library district had earlier decided to ask residents to approve enough bonds to fund the entire expansion project.
Elliott said the district would resubmit its application for a share of the state money by late July. The money awarded Tuesday represented about half of the $75 million authorized by voters when they passed the bond act.
The remainder of the funds are expected to be awarded to libraries in November.
