Ban on Arms Sales
Rep. Tony Beilenson’s superb letter (April 6) urging a permanent worldwide ban on arms sales by all nations deserves instant implementation. On that same day, The Times announced the Army’s $34-billion order for helicopters and also described how cleverly the military managed the Gulf War news.
Chances for this ban are slim for several reasons: The military-industrial-government complex controls our economy. Nobody comes up with viable alternatives. Weapons sales make people rich. With 90% of U.S. delighting in the recent war, few will endorse a ban. Above all, through the ages the human race has consistently chosen war over peaceful negotiations, killing and death over happiness and life.
