Why Did Dusty Bother to Return?

Share

I read and reread the article describing the arduous trek made by the “wonder dog” Dusty. What I wonder is why did the dog bother returning to its owners?

The dog was abandoned by David Rees because of its “excessive barking.” He was quoted as saying, “Thank God I got rid of that dog.” Did Rees ever stop to think that the dog was loose on the street to suffer and probably die? All too many people treat their pets in this manner, and this is why the county is responsible for killing thousands of unwanted animals every month.

The article states that Dusty was born in a hole in the back yard. After she was born, Mrs. Rees rarely played with the dog because it was “too rambunctious.” Given the care and attention the poor animal received, it is no wonder that she barked!

The final paragraph sums up the intent of these people. “I think she’s earned her right to stay. Now if we ever had to put her to sleep and she came back, then we’re talking The Twilight Zone.”

When the Rees family tires of Dusty, I would be proud to have her.
