Alpharel Inc., a Camarillo-based company that makes computer data storage devices, posted first-quarter earnings of $256,000, compared with a $313,000 loss a year earlier. Revenues for the quarter that ended March 31 were $1.6 million, up 42% from $1.1 million in the first quarter of 1990.

The company said lower operating expenses were partly responsible for the turnaround. It also cited large orders from Caterpillar, a Peoria, Ill., maker of earthmoving equipment.
