TransTechnology Corp., a Sherman Oaks company that makes electronic components for the military and industrial markets, said its Belfort Instrument Division has been awarded a contract worth up to $18 million.

The contract calls for Belfort to supply computerized weather sensors, for measuring visibility, wind speed and direction, to the National Weather Service Automated Surface Observing System. The system is part of a $1-billion overhaul of the U.S. weather forecasting service at National Weather Service sites, airports and military sites.

TransTechnology said the contract provides for production of $860,000 worth of weather sensors during the federal government’s fiscal year that ends in September. Options over the next four fiscal years would result in production of about 1,200 units valued at $12 million, the company said. Spare parts and optional units produced for the sensors could push the total contract value to $18 million, it said.
