An exploding ammunition truck rocked the Kuwait headquarters of the U.N. Gulf War observer force Monday, injuring four civilian workers and destroying 11 vehicles.

U.N. officers and staff ran for cover as small-arms ammunition, rocket-propelled grenades and shells exploded in a series of blasts lasting about half an hour.

U.N. officials said that a Kuwaiti military truck, collecting unexploded ordnance left behind by the Iraqis, exploded in front of the hotel where the U.N. headquarters is located. They said the blast seemed to be an accident but had no idea what caused it.
