Statues Stolen From Gardens of 2 Homes

Several statues, including a $25,000 marble figure of Cupid, were stolen from the gardens of two La Canada Flintridge homes over the weekend.

A few of the statues were damaged but recovered in the street a short distance from where they were taken. Those recovered included the 3-foot-6, 200-pound Cupid, which had four fingers and a thumb broken off a hand, according to a report by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

The owner, Antoinette Berget, reported that the statue is more than 60 years old and made of Italian Carrara marble.

Several other statues valued from $25 to $50 were taken from pedestals in her garden in the 700 block of Berkshire Avenue late Saturday or early Sunday morning and were still missing early this week.

Sandra Kay Burkes, who lives a short distance away in the 800 block of Flintridge Avenue, reported about the same time the theft of several statues. Among figures still missing is a 300-pound cement lion valued at $250.

At least two thieves are believed to have participated because of the weight of the statues, investigators said. Tire tracks indicate that a pickup truck was used.

Investigators have no witnesses or suspects.

Sheriff’s Lt. Rod Johnson said statues are reported stolen several times a year in the foothill communities, where many expensive residences are decorated with statuary.
