$7-Million Office Building Purchased for Health Dept.
After four decades in a building described as “ungodly” by one city councilman, the Long Beach Health and Human Services Department will soon be moving to new quarters.
The City Council has approved the purchase of a $7-million office building on Grand Avenue for the Health Department, which has been crammed into a deteriorating building on Pine Avenue. The new site east of Signal Hill will provide about twice as much space as the old building, which was on the west side of the city.
In addition to the purchase price, the city will spend another $2.3 million to remodel the former Hewlett Packard office building to fit Health Department needs. The city has obtained a $4.8-million low-interest loan from the state and will cover the remaining costs with money left over from the sale of city land to Memorial Medical Center.
The city will probably try to develop the old Health Department site for commercial retail use, said Susan Shick, community development director.
