First the Barrymores, then the Hustons. And it now appears that another clan is making Hollywood “a family affair.” Emilio Estevez and Charlie Sheen aren’t the only children of actor Martin Sheen to parallel papa’s path. There’s also daughter Renee and son Ramon Estevez. The latter currently stars with his father and brother Charlie in the military-themed movie “Cadence,” which marks his dad’s debut as a feature film director. The Estevez/Sheen paternal ancestry is from Galicia, Spain. Ramon learned Spanish while living and studying with an aunt in Madrid, where he supported himself by teaching English.

Although the Cuban jazz group Irakere earned a Grammy in 1979, the award did not reach its musicians until 1991. The 11-member band could not come to the United States to attend the 1980 awards show, so officials of the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences recently traveled to Havana to make the presentation.

And this year’s “rap” Grammy winner, M. C. Hammer, hammered his way to the top--reaching No. 1 in Cuba’s hit parade. As per the official Cuban news agency, Prensa Latina, his mega-selling “You Can’t Touch This” was also awarded the Antorcha Musical, given to that island’s most played song.

And in the United States, “No Basta” (It’s Not Enough”), the hit by Venezuela’s Franco De Vita, has rocketed to No. 1 on Billboard’s “Hot Latin Chart.” The song conveys a poignant message about children needing love, not just material possessions. A U.S. tour for the singer/songwriter is in the works and is expected to include several concerts in California.

Although Academy Award nominee Andy Garcia may not have walked away with the Oscar for his supporting role in “Godfather III,” he is definitely taking home an Angel. This award will be given May 16 by the Bilingual Foundation of the Arts for Garcia’s contribution to the Latino arts in the United States. Respected actress Carmen Zapata, president of the Bilingual Foundation of the Arts, praised the actor’s many accomplishments. The two most recent winners were actors Edward James Olmos in 1989 and Jimmy Smits in 1990. Proceeds from the dinner at the Biltmore are to be used for the BFA’s stage productions and for future development.
