High Life A WEEKLY FORUM FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS : Journalism Winners Announced

Betsy Burbridge of Orange High School and Jennifer Mahr of Sunny Hills High School were repeat winners in the sixth annual High School Journalism Awards competition sponsored by The Times Orange County.

Winners and honorable mention honorees were announced May 1 at a dessert/reception awards ceremony at The Times in Costa Mesa.

Burbridge, who took first place in sports writing last year, finished first in the same category this year and was awarded $250 for her efforts. Mahr repeated her victory in the cartoon/illustration category of the contest.

Corona del Mar’s newspaper, The Trident, won the best issue award for papers over four pages, while Kennedy’s newspaper, The Shamrock, won for best four-page paper. Each school was awarded $1,000 for its journalism program.

* Cartoon/illustration--winner Mahr; honorable mention Lawrence Hamishima, Dana Hills.

* Best issue (over four pages)--winner Corona del Mar; honorable mention Irvine.

* Best issue (four pages)--winner Kennedy; honorable mention Valencia.

The Stars of David program is designed to give Jewish high school juniors and seniors the opportunity to perform community service work in Orange County.

The program, sponsored by the Jewish Federation of Orange County, will provide students with training and provide local Jewish agencies with needed volunteers.

Interested teen-agers between the ages of 16 and 19 are invited to attend an orientation brunch 11 a.m. Sunday at Temple Bat Yahn, 1011 Camelback St., Newport Beach.
