Levine Seeks Funding for Waste Water Project
U.S. Rep. Mel Levine (D-Santa Monica) is seeking federal matching funds to help finance efforts to pipe billions of gallons of treated waste water a year to local water users ranging from golf courses to oil refineries.
Under legislation Levine introduced Thursday, the federal government would foot 25% of the construction bill for major water reclamation projects in the South Bay and Sun Valley areas.
The largest project, slated for completion in the next four years at a cost of $175 million to $200 million, calls for reclamation of 62.5 million gallons of waste water a day from Los Angeles’ Hyperion sewage plant in Playa del Rey. The agency organizing the South Bay project, the West Basin Municipal Water District, plans to raise money for the work by selling municipal bonds.
