Man Pleads No Contest to Threats Against Arabs

A Holocaust survivor angered when Iraqi Scud missiles began hitting Israel during the Persian Gulf War pleaded no contest Thursday to threatening the Arab-American Anti-Discrimination Committee in Hollywood.

Kurt Haber, 60, of Beverly Hills, was charged with two counts of violating the state’s terrorist threats law. Authorities said Haber called the committee office on Jan. 17, the day Iraqi missiles slammed into Tel Aviv. Nazih Bayda, regional director of the committee, received the telephone calls.

Bayda told investigators the caller said, “You just bombed my city with chemical weapons. We are going to bomb your place tonight. My brother is there and might be dead.”

Haber’s attorney, Theodore Cohen, said the scenes brought back painful memories for his client.
