NATION IN BRIEF : MICHIGAN : Young’s Associate Sentenced in Fraud
A former Detroit deputy police chief and business partner of Mayor Coleman A. Young has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for his role in a precious-metals investment scheme. Kenneth Weiner, 45, of Detroit and two Oakland County businessmen were indicted in February, 1990, on wire fraud, mail fraud and other charges in the scheme, which bilked investors of an estimated $20 million from 1983-86. Also convicted were Dr. Steven Lewin, 43, who received four years in prison, and Alvin Gendelman, 59, whose sentencing was postponed. Young has not been linked to the scheme.
