A water main burst and flooded a downtown pedestrian tunnel before dawn Friday, turning the underground walkway into a virtual river that reached depths of more than five feet.

The main apparently broke at about 4 a.m. and dumped water into the tunnel running between the Harris County civil and criminal courts buildings and a county administration building.

The tunnel system is normally jammed with pedestrians, but it had to be closed as workers slowly pumped out the water.
