German Official Calls for National War on Terrorism
German Interior Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble, confined to a wheelchair since an assassination attempt last year, declared war Friday against rising crime and terrorism.
“All efforts must be made to close the security gaps as soon as possible,” he told a meeting of interior ministers from Germany’s 16 states.
Schaeuble said racial and political violence was tarnishing Germany’s international image.
Police have failed to catch a new generation of Red Army Faction guerrillas, blamed for a wave of bombings and killings in the last 20 years.
