Charlie Hayes hit a home run leading off the eighth inning against Jay Howell to break an eighth-inning tie Saturday night and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Dodgers, 4-3.

After the Dodgers scored three times in the top of the eighth, Hayes hit his fourth home run to make a loser out of Howell (0-1). It was the first decision of the season for a Dodger relief pitcher.

Terry Mulholland (3-2) gave up six hits in eight innings. Mitch Williams pitched the ninth for his sixth save, getting pinch-hitter Darryl Strawberry on a called third strike with two runners on base to end the game.

Mulholland took a three-hitter and a 3-0 lead into the eighth.

Pinch-hitter Lenny Harris singled with one out and Brett Butler bunted for a hit.

Pinch-hitter Gary Carter grounded into a forceout, but second baseman Mickey Morandini’s relay for a possible double play was wild, allowing Harris to score. Juan Samuel followed with his fifth home run of the season.

The tie lasted only until Hayes faced Howell in the bottom of the inning.

The Phillies got three runs in the first off Bob Ojeda.

Lenny Dykstra led off with a single and scored on Randy Ready’s double.

John Kruk reached on an infield single and when second baseman Samuel threw wildly, Ready scored and Kruk went to second. Ricky Jordan followed with an RBI single.
